Archaeological Museum in Split

THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM In Split is the oldest museum in Croatia founded in 1820. The arrival of Emperor Francis I in Dalmatia in 1818 was a historical turning point. After his visit and tour of the cities of Split and Solin, seeing the importance of their historical and cultural heritage, the topic of founding the first museum institution was raised.

An important role in the history of the museum was played by Don Frane Bulić (1846 – 1934), a Catholic priest, archaeologist, historian and conservator, and director of the Museum from 1884 to 1926. He is responsible for the construction of the current museum building, erected in 1914. according to the designs of Viennese architects August Kirstein and Friedrich Ohman. Thanks to him, the research of Salona is experiencing a golden age, and the Museum focuses on the research of many other Dalmatian localities.

The architectural complex of the museum consists of the main building with an exhibition hall on the ground floor, and a library and study rooms on the first floor, a lapidary, and a landscaped garden.

The Museum’s fund has several tens of thousands of various archaeological objects, which are distributed in the following collections: Prehistoric, Greek-Hellenistic, Roman-provincial, Late Antique, Medieval, Numismatic, and Epigraphic collection; then the Underwater Archeology Collection, the Salona Collection and Site, the Issa Collection and Site, the Art and Crafts Collection, the Modern Age Monument Collection, and the Modern Age Monument Collection.

The museum has a rich library and archive collection. Since 1878, he has been publishing the specialized journal. The museum conducts regular archaeological research in two localities, in the area of ancient Salona and Isa (Issa), and owns a regional building in Solin – Tusculum and the Issa Archaeological Collection in Vis.

The museum organizes various exhibitions, workshops, and educational programs for school children and the public. It is a member of the International Network of Museums and is involved in international projects for the protection and promotion of cultural heritage.
